The buying process

The process of buying a boat, whether new or used, requires dealing with many unknowns. Before embarking on a search, it is worth emphasizing the importance of a clear definition of what we want, or what we want the boat for: what in jargon is defined as “the program”. A well-defined program is an essential step if we want to find a boat with the right characteristics that will satisfy us.

The program

A program basically defines the use we want to give the boat. Variables such as the type of navigation: weekend, long-distance cruise, a regatta, or a combination of all. The sailing area: Mediterranean, North Sea, Atlantic, Caribbean. The scheduled non-stop days: if we are more of spending long periods away from a port or prefer to stay close to a marina. The number of people we want on board: we are going to sail alone, as a couple, as a family, with friends, a variable crew. All these are important variables to consider, on the basis of which the typology of the boat and its definition come as a consequence, and ensure the most appropriate choice.

Does the boat fit my program?

The other side of the coin is the design and construction of the boat. Construction materials, stability, performance ratios, strong wind behaviour, ability to move in light airs, stowage capacity, accommodation… All these are variables that can be studied, analysing the design of the vessel of interest, and determining how the characteristics of the boat are adapted to the desired program.

How can we help?

Our experience and global vision allow us to analyse scientifically the design characteristics of a vessel and to which degree they fit with the client’s program. Based on a brief questionnaire about the program, we evaluate one or several boats of interest and produce a report with the results of our analysis together with our expert recommendations that will serve as a guide to make a sensible and informed decision.

This is a fully remote service. Once you have decided on the boat, if you want to go further, you can consult our Walk-through or Pre-Purchase survey services.

Tell us what you need and we will assist you promptly.
