The importance of an inspection out of the water

A pre-purchase survey for an Italian client. A boat from 2001, sole owner, well maintained but with some damage. When lifting the boat out of the water, obvious signs of grounding were evident.

When a boat suffers a grounding, the internal structure usually suffers in some critical points:

Simplification of the keel-structure system. Example of the forces and moments due to a frontal impact. The areas in yellow are usually areas of high stress, with possible deformations, delaminations or detachment of structural elements (author's drawing).

Both the keel and the bulb in this case are made of lead, a very ductile material that in the event of an impact can absorb a good part of the energy through its deformation. A detailed inspection of the critical points in the structure was carried out. The areas that could be inspected did not show signs of significant damage, but more clarifying tests could not be carried out, since the owner did not give his consent.

The results of the inspection were included in the report together with recommendations, which allowed the client to obtain a written guarantee to cover possible hidden damage not identified during the inspection. Thanks to this work the sale could be completed successfully.
